3 Ways To Reinvent Your Old Decks

Why let the fun end there?
LILY LONGRIGG  |

Ever snapped a board trying to land a trick? Ever been aware of a weakness in your deck that one day just gave way? Or maybe you’re just looking for inspo in that new flat you just put a deposit down on? Either way, fear not, because we’ve found some ways to recycle your old boards into new items for around the home.

Not only is this a great way to furnish your place with unique, one-off pieces but it also has environmental perks. According to EcoGreen Services, there are 11-14 million skateboarders in the US, each using up to 4 boards a year, so imagine how many of these end up in landfill.

This is why we’ve come up with some uses for the deck that no longer shreds. And good news, you don’t need to have a degree in woodwork to make them either.

Bench/Coffee Table

Probably the easiest and one of the most useful, this is our number one. Not only can it be used as a seat but also a coffee table. What more could you want?!
With not a lot of effort you can transform your scuffed-up deck. Just remove the trucks and screw in some legs, we’re a big fan of the hairpin style which screw straight into the bolt threads. But why stop there? If you’re feeling adventurous you can sand down the deck and either paint or varnish it for the finishing look.

Cop hairpin legs here.

Shelves

There are a few ways in which you can make shelves with your old decks. The first is by stacking two or more decks to create a shelving unit, just insert strong metal rods through the bolt threads or drill straight through the boards and secure. This one can be used as a bookshelf or even a TV stand. We love the look of plain ply decks for a minimalist look.

Secondly, for an industrial twist, use a singular deck and wall mount for a solo shelf. Copper mounts look fresh!

The last shelving option would be to simply feed ribbon, twine or a strong string through the bolt threads of a deck and hang the deck as a shelf, securing the edge to the wall with a screw either side.

Light Up Wall Mount

This one is simple but looks pretty lit (no pun intended). Just mount a colorful deck to the wall using a few screws or hooks and then tape some LED light strips to the underside. You can cop color changing lights that will add a cozy vibe to any room.

Toilet Roll Holder

Our final choice had to be the toilet roll holder, simply cos it’s so random. There are a couple of ways to do this, the first one involves just removing the wheels and adding a toilet roll holder fitting and then either putting the wheels back on or just screwing the nuts (lol) straight back on.
