Vans Co-Founder Paul Van Doren has Died at 90
For many people, skateboarding and Vans are “synonymous.” Now, as a skateboarding website and magazine, we know that not every skater is a lover of Vans. Sure, in recent years they have become more of a lifestyle brand, and maybe a lot of their shoes aren’t ideal for serious skateboarding. That doesn’t matter. Vans and skateboarding have been hand-in-hand for decades, and they will be for decades more. We can thank Paul Van Doren for that, Van Doren was one of the co-founders of Vans, and the vital figure in skateboarding has passed away at 90. Van Doren helped launch Vans all the way back in 1966, before skateboarding was even a thing in the United States. He was just a dude working in the world of shoes. Then, Vans started making shoes for skaters. You know the designs. You’ve seen the red logo tags on the back of many a midsole. Van Doren had as big of a role in skateboarding as anyway. We’ll put Van Doren’s influence up there with the likes of Tony Hawk. Condolences to his family. The man did so much in his 90 years.
