Feel Stuck? Can’t Progress While Skateboarding?

TRY THIS!
ALEX RIVERA  |

We’ve all been there—you hit the park, warm up, and start running through your usual tricks. But after a while, it feels like you’re just going through the motions. No new tricks, no fresh lines, no real progress. It’s like you’ve hit a wall, and no matter how many times you try that new trick, it just won’t happen. Frustrating, right?

Well, don’t worry. Every skater deals with this at some point, but the good news? There are ways to break out of the rut. Here’s how to keep the progression alive and get hyped on skating again!

1. Change Up Your Spot

Skating the same park or street spot every session is comfortable—but that’s also the problem. If you keep skating the same setup, you’ll naturally gravitate toward the same tricks. Try skating a totally different park, a fresh street spot, or even just approach your usual park from a different angle. New obstacles = new inspiration!

2. Set a Trick Goal for Each Session

Instead of just cruising and hoping for progression, set a small goal before your session. It could be as simple as “land 5 clean kickflips” or “try a new variation of a trick I already know.” The key is to have a focus. Small wins lead to bigger breakthroughs!

3. Film Yourself (Even If You Don’t Post It)

You might not realize what’s holding you back until you see it on film. A lot of times, what feels good doesn’t always look right. Recording your tricks can help you catch mistakes—maybe your foot placement is off, or you’re not committing fully. Plus, looking back at past clips is a great way to see how far you’ve come!

4. Skate With New People

Nothing pushes your skating more than being around others who challenge and inspire you. If your usual crew is feeling the same way, switch it up! Link up with a different group, hit up a local event, or just spark a session with random skaters at the park. Seeing new tricks in person will motivate you to try different things.

5. Take a Break (Yes, Really!)

Sometimes, progression stalls because your body and mind need a reset. If you’re feeling frustrated every session, take a few days off and do something else—watch skate videos, stretch, or even just chill. Coming back after a short break often brings new energy and fresh perspective.

6. Try a Totally Different Trick Selection

If you’ve been grinding the same trick list forever, it might be time to mix it up. If you’re a ledge skater, try some transition. If you only skate rails, mess with some manuals. Learning different types of tricks keeps things exciting and improves your overall board control.

7. Remind Yourself Why You Skate

At the end of the day, skateboarding is supposed to be fun. If you’re stressing too hard about progression, take a step back and just cruise. Skate with no expectations, mess around with weird tricks, and enjoy the feeling of rolling. That’s when the best breakthroughs usually happen.

Final Thoughts
Progression in skateboarding isn’t always linear—it comes in waves. Some days you feel like a pro, other days you can’t even ollie properly. That’s normal. The key is to keep things fresh, stay motivated, and most importantly, keep having fun.
