The Top 10 Tips Every Skater Needs To Hear
If you’re just starting out on your board, there are a few things you should know. And if you’ve been skating for years, take a minute to refresh your mind on the top 10 tips every skater should know. We got you!
#1 DO IT ‘COS YOU LOVE IT
To really immerse yourself in skating, you have to be passionate about it. Don’t do it for the sake of it or to try and fit in, do it because you want to and because you enjoy it! You’ll go much farther if you are actually determined to do well…
#2 LEARN THE BASICS!
It’s important to get comfortable with the skateboarding basics before you go on to try more challenging tricks. Get cozy with your ollies and pop-shuvits; these can be springboards for other gnarly stunts.
#3 INVEST IN A GOOD PAIR OF SKATE SHOES
One of the most important tips! Your shoes for skating should have a wide and flat sole with lots of grip to be able to skate to your full potential without your sneakers holding you back. Skate shoes usually have reinforcements where other shoes do not specially design to support the skater. Check out Vans or Adidas’ skate range.
#4 THE SKATE PARK IS YOUR NEW BESTIE
Don’t be afraid to visit the skate park to try out new tricks, meet other skaters, or simply get more comfortable with your board. Surrounding yourself in a skating environment can encourage you to learn and really submerge you in the skating world.
#5 SKATE WITHIN YOUR MEANS
Don’t suddenly think you’re Tony Hawk and try a trick you know is super difficult that you’ve never tried before. Don’t try and impress when you know you’re not yet at that level, that’s wack. Build yourself up to that level before trying anything rash.
#6 TRY NEW THINGS!
Without suddenly thinking you’re Tony Hawk, don’t be scared to try new tricks. This is how we learn, after all. Just make sure they’re not way outside of your capability, otherwise, it could be a trip to the emergency room.
#7 STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS
Every single skater is on their own journey. Some progress quicker than others, and that’s okay. Take your time and enjoy the ride, you will get there!
#8 YOUR BOARD MATTERS, BUT NOT AS MUCH AS YOU THINK
Don’t get us wrong, boards are very important. But if things aren’t going too well, don’t be quick to blame the board, as it might not be the equipment that’s the problem. Regardless, don’t go for a super pricy or a super cheap board as it might make learning more difficult, search for the middle ground.
#9 DON’T GET DISHEARTENED
Skating is a process, it takes time. If there’s a trick you’re struggling to nail and by the end of the day you’re still falling on your head, go back to basics. Remind yourself of your talents! You’ll return to the trick feeling refreshed and ready to go.
#10 FINALLY, YOU GOT THIS!
You’re killin’ it, keep going!!!
