SKATERS HIT THE EUROPEAN STREETS DURING LOCKDOWN

All the space in the world but nobody to share it with.

In a way, skateboarding is an activity that you can do during a pandemic lockdown. Self-quarantine and physical distancing rules don’t keep you off your board. In some areas, being outside at all was frowned upon, which limited your skating opportunities. However, for many of us getting outside for exercise is about the only reprieve we get. For that brief spell, you can grab your board, find an isolated spot, and go for it. The problem is that your only companion at that time is your board, and it’s hard to share what you’re doing with the world. For certain social-media-happy skaters, that’s a weird place to be.

Fortunately, even in the time of self-isolation, you can share your skate videos with the world, at least if you get creative. A couple of Europe-based skaters made the effort to chronicle the experience of skating during quarantine when the streets are largely empty and big cities can get eerily quiet. In Berlin, a skater we know only as “Fred” spent a few days shooting a short video titled Silent City, which is more eerie than most skating videos. Meanwhile, in France, skater Victor Cascarigny filmed himself skating around Toulouse. These are ominous times, and even skaters are feeling it.
