Boarding the Right Way when Rolling Through the Streets

Stay safe, follow laws, respect others
ALEX RIVERA  |

It doesn't take much for something to ruin your day when out on a skate run. Boarding the right way makes sure you respect others, the environment and stay safe, especially as you learn.

Obey Public Laws to Avoid the Cops

One of the biggest obstacles to an enjoyable day of skating is the cops. Cops love to put a downer on your boarding, and they see it as a nuisance. But they can't do much if you stick to the law and treat them with respect. Sure, they may get an exaggerated call that you are causing a disturbance when you aren't. But they might be cool if you stick to the law. Keep your Elux Vape Flavours in your pocket so you aren't smoking in public. And keep the weed at home!

Find Somewhere Out of the Way

The cops can and will move you along if you are getting in the way of people when boarding in public. But they and most people won't mind if you are skating somewhere out of the way. A dedicated skate park is the best place to hang out and learn from each other. But not all neighborhoods have these. It can be tempting to skate all over town when you have nowhere to go. But there's always somewhere most borders gather to pull some tricks and share tips.

Boarding the Right Way with Safety Gear

Safety first! This can't be understated. Skateboarding is a relatively harmless sport next to other extreme sports. But you can and will fall to the ground, sometimes from speed, height, or both. There are around 150 skateboarding-related deaths in the US each year, many of which are on the road. So stay off the f*cking road because your life depends on it! Gear up with a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads. You may feel like a dork, but is looking cool really worth your life?

Have Some Respect for Others

Think about the things that really annoy you. Would you want them in your face all the time? Skateboarding is a great way to meet new people and hang out with a shared passion. And that's a good thing to have in life. But a large group of boards rolling through the streets can be intimidating and even scary for some people. Have a little respect for other people. Try not to board past people at speed; pick up around little kids and the elderly, and watch your speed.

Pack Up Your Shit When You Leave

Skateboarders already have an unjustly bad reputation. Do you want to be one of the douchebags who makes it worse? The streets and parks belong to everyone, so make sure you pack up your shit when you leave. Cleaning up your trash and leaving a place as you found it is just respectful. But it also makes sure you aren't responsible for injuring someone else. Another skateboarder could end up seriously injured because you couldn't be bothered to clean up!

Summary

Sticking to public laws when boarding the right way will help reduce interference from cops. You may feel silly, but safety gear is vital when just starting out or experienced. Packing up your stuff when you leave an area is critical, as anything can cause injury to a fast skateboarder.
