The 2025 Simple Session delivered a sick weekend of world-class skateboarding, bringing together 48 men and nine women to battle for the top spots. In a competition filled with high-flying tricks and technical precision, Great Britain’s Sky Brown and Sweden’s Hampus Winberg came out on top in their divisions.

Sky Brown Claims Victory in Sister Session

At just 16 years old, Sky Brown once again proved why she is one of the best in the world, securing the gold medal in the women’s competition with an outstanding score of 92.83. The two-time Olympic bronze medalist showed a powerful mix of style, technical skill, and high-impact tricks that set her apart from the competition.

Brown’s closest rival, 16-year-old Naia Laso from Spain, delivered an exceptional run that earned her an impressive 89.50 points and the silver medal. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Brit Lola Tambling claimed the bronze with a score of 81.83.

Reflecting on her victory, Brown highlighted the immense growth of women’s skateboarding since her last Simple Session appearance in 2019, when she won at just 10 years old.

“Every trick I do, I focus on making it look beautiful too,” Brown shared. “Compared to last time, the level among the girls has risen tremendously, and everyone gave their best. It wasn’t easy for me to win at all compared to six years ago.”

In addition to her skateboarding ambitions, Brown is also a rising star in the surfing world. She has set her sights on qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in both skateboarding and surfing, with hopes of securing two gold medals.

Judge Pat Duffy praised the level of competition, emphasizing that the battle for first place was incredibly close.

“Naia Laso had an amazing run—she did a lot of spins, used the entire park, flew high and fast, and I honestly didn’t think Sky could beat her,” Duffy admitted. “But in the finals, Sky increased her speed, and what made the difference was that she managed to fit in her last trick—the kickflip indy.”

Men’s Showdown: Winberg Edges Out Sakurai

The men’s competition came down to a thrilling battle between 18-year-old Swede Hampus Winberg and 16-year-old Japanese sensation Issei Sakurai. Winberg narrowly took the gold with a score of 91.11, edging out Sakurai’s 90.00.

Sakurai had dominated the qualification round and continued to impress in the finals with smooth, flawless runs. However, Winberg’s second run, filled with high-risk tricks and technical precision, gave him the slight advantage needed to secure the win.

“The course was great, and I liked it even more than in previous years,” Winberg said. “Since the competition arena is so big and impressive, the level of skaters was also high, with tons of opportunities to use the space creatively.”

The bronze medal went to 30-year-old Spaniard Danny Leon, the 2024 Simple Session champion, who scored 87.48 points. Leon, a fan favorite in Estonia, once again delivered an impressive performance that kept the audience on the edge of their seats.

According to Jarmo Kangro, head of Simple Session’s skateboarding division, the competition course was designed to challenge skaters and encourage creativity.

“Nate Wessel designed the jumps and elements in a way that presents a challenge, helping skaters push their limits. Unlike traditional skateparks, Simple Session’s course has no standard solutions,” Kangro explained.

Judge Pat Duffy echoed these sentiments, noting how close the final results were.

“First and second place were extremely close,” Duffy admitted. “Hampus Winberg’s second run was incredible—full of high-risk tricks, big airs, and multiple flip tricks. Issei Sakurai had great speed and jumps, including a stylish body varial, but he was missing flip tricks. Both of them showcased the absolute best of skateboarding, but in the end, Hampus had more variety.”
