WATCH TISLAM SMITH SKATE, TELL US ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE
Los Angeles is a diverse city. It’s also a city with terrible traffic, like, all the time, but that’s neither here nor there. Especially when your primary form of transportation is a skateboard. Southern California was vital in the rise of skateboarding, and Los Angeles is one of the key cities for skaters. It’s also the home of Tislam Smith, who we recently talked to for our latest video.
Obviously, we love skateboarding, and we love talking to skateboarders. That being said, Smith was a particularly great subject for this video. He has a distinct experience as a skater, growing up black in Los Angeles. We can probably say, with honesty, that the world of skating is more open to diversity than other spaces in our world. It also is far from perfect. It feels inane to say that this is a particularly important time to talk about diversity and the experience that black people have navigating the world, because it has always been just as important but people are finally catching up. Nevertheless, we’re extremely pleased to show this video with you, which is a great look at Smith as a person, and also of course as a skateboarder.
