Rockstar Energy Open 2025 Kicks Off in Portland

Day One Highlights from Rockstar Energy Open
ALEX RIVERA  |

Portland’s Tom McCall Waterfront Park was buzzing Friday as the Rockstar Energy Open 2025 kicked off, and the first day didn’t disappoint. Skateboarders from around the globe were already making waves, and the crowd soaked it all in before The Paradox and Face to Face closed out the night with some tunes.

The competition had a different flavor this year thanks to ThePlatfrm.com, which allowed skaters to submit video parts over the past couple months for a shot at competing onsite. Twenty winners made it to Portland to throw down for a chance to skate with the pros.

Women’s VQS On-site Qualifiers:
Japan took over the top spots with Niko Sugimoto, Aoi Fukada, and Yuri Ashizawa earning their tickets to Sunday’s Women’s Street Final. These three are bringing serious style and control, and we’re stoked to see how they match up against the pro field.

Men’s VQS On-site Qualifiers:
Malachai Gray led the pack, with Kristion Jordan, 11-year-old prodigy Wyatt Hammond, and Seattle’s Nels Rosen rounding out the qualifiers. These four will join the pros in Saturday’s Men’s Street Semifinal, and let’s just say, the future of street skating looks bright.

Men’s Park Qualifiers:
Olympic medalist Tom Schaar wasted no time taking the top spot on his first run. Gavin Bottger, fresh off an X Games gold, came in second, and Yuro Nagahara ended the day with a show-stopping stall atop the Rockstar Energy logo feature for third. The top ten now move on to Sunday’s Men’s Park Final, where anything could happen.

Tomorrow heats up with the Women’s Park Final, Men’s Street Semifinal, Park Best Trick Jam, and Street Best Trick Jam. Music-wise, Teen Mortgage will open for The Story So Far right after the last event around 7:30 p.m.

Check out the photos from Day One to catch all the tricks you missed—and stay tuned for Saturday’s action. Portland is locked in, and the Rockstar Energy Open 2025 is just getting started.
