Mastering The Inward Heelflip

If you want to learn inward heels, then we got your back
BRODY TOWNSEND  |

An inward heelflip is kind of like a combination of the backside pop shove-it and a heelflip. It’s also the mirrored version of a hardflip in both the board is flipping between your legs. This is one of the coolest tricks to master, it looks dope and the payoff in slow-motion film is worth it.

Some tricks you’re going to have to make sure you can do first are: the ollie, heelflip, and backside pop shove it, knowing the hardflip also helps heaps but isn’t necessary.

On your back foot you want to have your toes on the back heel side pocket and your front foot just below the truck bolts with the ball of your foot on the front edge of the board. It can help to have for feet slightly angled to the back of the board to flip between your legs. You are going to want to pop with your back foot while flicking out and focus on your front foot sliding up the board and hooking to give you rotation.

To practice start popping the board while moving and scissoring your legs - front foot goes forward and back foot goes backward. The most important thing is getting your front foot out of the way. Once you have mastered this, start attempting the trick but don’t worry about landing it, see if you can get the rotation by hooking your front foot. It should take you around 30 minutes to perfect this, then start trying to land it with your front foot.

Once you’ve got all this then try putting it all together and land with both feet, commit. Mike Piwowar shares some more trick tips in the video above.
