Jake Wooten Skates a 1973 Deck

Can a modern skater handle the old-school design?
CHRIS MORGAN  |

Santa Cruz Skateboards is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The company has been making hard goods for skaters since 1973. Of course, skateboarding was way different back then, including the boards themselves. What would it be like for somebody raised on modern skating to hop on a classic board? We don’t need to merely imagine it, because it happened.

To celebrate its anniversary, Santa Cruz has reissued its Cruzer board from 1973. Then, they got Jake Wooten, a skater born in the year 2000, to ride it. Wooten doesn’t just ride it around. He hits some ramps, some rails, and more. How does the Cruzer handle skating 2023 style?
