Free Movement Skateboarding is Providing Lessons to refugees in Greece
With a focus on empowering girls to skate
Athens, Greece is a city teeming with immigrants, and particularly refugees. One group, Free Movement Skateboarding, is helping the children of refugees learn how to skate. The group, and one leader of said group, has been profiled in The Guardian.
The first-person piece is told through the words of Erato, a woman from Athens who picked up a skateboard when one was gifted to her by her sister at the age of 21. Now, Erato is helping Free Movement Skateboarding teach the children of refugees the skill. In particular, Erato is focused on getting more girls skateboarding, as female skaters do still lag in some pockets of the world. It’s an interesting piece, and a good cause.
