Check Out This Weird, Old Red Bull Skateboarding Video

An early foray into the platform
CHRIS MORGAN  |

Red Bull Skateboarding has had a presence on YouTube since the rise of the platform. They have videos going back to 2007. The video that grabbed me, though, is a gimmick video from 2008. Trying to find a hook for skate videos has always been an aspect of getting clicks and views, and so Red Bull went and skated at the “world’s smallest country.”

The video is only a minute long, fitting for the size of the skate space. There’s nothing to skate at Sealand, so they had to set up a spot. Also, boats and helicopters had to be used to get there. The Red Bull video calls Sealand a nation, but that’s salesmanship. Sealand is an abandoned military platform, and a dude named Paddy Roy Bates showed up in 1967 to take it from some pirate radio broadcasters and declare it a sovereign nation. Guinness has it listed as the “smallest area to lay claim to nation status.” There is not a single nation out there that recognizes Sealand, though. It’s technically in British territory. Basically, Red Bull has recognized Sealand as a nation and…nobody else. Hey, it gave them a title for a video in 2008, though.
