A Guide To Night Skating

The best kind of skating, if done right
MAX ROSENGREN  |

Summer is getting close and closer by the minute, and that means we’re back to long skate sessions continuing into warm, late summer nights. There isn’t much that beats spending all day on the deck, but one thing that may very well beat you is skating in the dark. Although it can be extremely fun, you’re going to have to take some safety precautions.

Now I know what you’re thinking, “Safety? I can hardflip down a ten stair, I don’t need safety”. And although I’m sure everyone is very impressed, the driver hit you from behind, all because he couldn’t see you, probably doesn’t care about your clean hardflips.

But worry not, DOSE has put together a little list on how to stay safe in the dark. It may save your life one day (remember to thank us if that happens).

#1 STAY VISIBLE

Make sure people around can see you. Sadly this means keep the black pieces at home. Now if you recently went full goth and threw everything colorful out, go get yourself some of those snap reflex bands. They could honestly save your life. Reflexes and 3M pieces are your friends, but if you’re too cool for that, opt for brighter colors like white, yellow and orange.

#2 KEEP YOUR HEAD SAFE

Remember that guy who didn’t need safety because he could hardflip a ten stair? Well, he probably won’t agree to this step. But I bet his mom would, and so would yours. No matter how comfortable you feel on your board, you never know when you’ll take your next tumble. So why risk it? Wear a helmet and keep that head of yours safe. Helmets save lives and the last thing you want is a broken head!

#3 USE LIGHTS

Pimping yourself out with lights is probably the best thing you can do for night skating. Skating lights actually exist, so why not use them? They go right under your board and will both light up the street and make you even more visible. Other options would be using a headlamp to light up the street, but make sure it fits over your helmet if you opt for this.

Now you probably think night skating is really dangerous. But if you follow our tips it’ll guarantee you some of your best skating sessions so far. Skating at night will give you next to empty streets, skate parks, and car parks. Perfect if you enjoy peaceful skating and practicing without your every move being watched.

So put the proper gear on, get out there and skate all night!
